The usual fix is to slightly scramble your tracked movement before it goes public, so the file no longer matches your real body. Until now, engineers judged these fixes mostly by measuring "physical deviation" — a number for how far the altered motion drifts from your actual motion. This study asked the obvious follow-up question: does that number actually predict whether players will accept the tool?
To find out, the team ran a study with real participants using three different privacy mechanisms at five levels of distortion. The result was clear. What users said about the tools explained far more about their acceptance than the deviation number did. Physical deviation still mattered, but it told only part of the story. The researchers also found that people with more VR experience, and people who had already heard about VR privacy tools, judged the mechanisms differently — meaning who you recruit for a study changes the answer you get.
Their recommendation is simple: stop relying on the math score alone. Combine it with real user feedback, and always report participants' prior VR experience so results can be compared fairly.
