Why doesn't my iPhone have a solid-state battery yet? I found out (and can't even be mad)

A new battery tech is safer and lasts longer, but you can't buy it.

Deep Dive

Solid-state batteries use solid, non-flammable materials instead of liquid electrolytes, making them safer, more energy-dense, and longer-lasting than current lithium-ion batteries. A demonstration showed stabbing one caused only a wisp of smoke. However, the technology is not yet ready for mass production at the scale required for billions of devices like iPhones, due to manufacturing and cost hurdles that prevent widespread consumer adoption.

Why It Matters

This next-gen battery technology promises safer, longer-lasting power for all our portable electronics once production scales up.
