Apple's iOS 26.6 preps your iPhone for Siri AI and patches 91 security flaws

Apple's iOS 26.6 is a seemingly minor point release, but it carries a critical precursor for the upcoming Siri AI features in iOS 27. The update optimizes the Spotlight search index so that on-device content — including app data, files, contacts, and calendar entries — is pre-indexed. Once you upgrade to iOS 27, this will let Siri AI answer natural language queries about your personal information almost instantly. However, not all devices get the AI boost: only iPhone 15 Pro/Pro Max, iPhone 16, and iPhone 17 models support Siri AI. Older iPhones (from iPhone 11 upward) can install iOS 27 but without the new AI capabilities.

Beyond the Siri preparation, iOS 26.6 addresses a hefty 91 security vulnerabilities affecting core components like the App Store, Contacts, Siri, Game Center, Wi-Fi, the iOS Kernel, and Apple's WebKit engine. Apple also added a practical safeguard: a warning appears if you try to block more than 20,000 contacts, and you must remove one before adding another. Apple Maps receives increased malware protection. The update also applies to iPadOS (with M1 or later iPads required for Siri AI) and corresponding 26.6 versions for macOS, watchOS, tvOS, and visionOS. Apple recommends installing now ahead of the expected September release of iOS 27.
