When Amazon badly needed a ride, Europe's Ariane 6 rocket delivered
Amazon's massive satellite constellation gets a crucial European launch partner, challenging SpaceX's dominance.
Europe's heavy-lift Ariane 6 rocket completed its first successful launch, delivering 32 satellites for Amazon's Project Kuiper broadband constellation. The Ariane 64 variant generated over 3.4 million pounds of thrust, carrying a 20-metric-ton payload to a 289-mile orbit. This marks the first of 18 planned Ariane 6 missions for Amazon, which has booked over 100 total launches to deploy its planned 3,200-satellite network to compete with SpaceX's Starlink.
Why It Matters
This successful launch establishes a major new competitor in the satellite internet race and provides Amazon a critical, non-SpaceX launch path for its constellation.
