Webtoon is overhauling its Canvas platform for user-uploaded comics with a suite of new features aimed at helping indie creators monetize and globalize their work. The headline addition is an optional AI-powered translation tool that will allow manga creators to localize their scripts into seven languages: English, Spanish, French, Indonesian, Thai, Traditional Chinese, and German. A beta version will launch for English-speaking Canvas users this spring, with a wider rollout planned for summer. The company is also expanding its ad revenue share program to all creators in supported languages and introducing an updated dashboard with deeper analytics on series performance and readership.
According to Webtoon president Yongsoo Kim, the translation tool is built on a hybrid system using the company's own proprietary language model and a powerful external LLM. It processes only the textual elements of a comic page, with no content stored or used for further model training. To improve consistency, creators can populate a glossary with series-specific terms. Kim emphasized the tool is designed to assist, not replace, creators, who retain full creative control and can opt out at any time. While AI quality is expected to improve as a series provides more context, a human review process will be available for error reports. This move mirrors similar efforts like Amazon's Kindle Translate and addresses longstanding distribution and language barriers for comic artists.
