Verified by Spotify badge lets you know this artist isn’t AI
Green checkmark confirms real humans, but AI verification may come later.
Spotify is rolling out a new 'Verified by Spotify' badge to help listeners identify authentic human artists amid a surge in AI-generated music. The green checkmark appears on artist profiles, signaling that Spotify has confirmed a real person is behind the music. At launch, the company is explicitly excluding personas or profiles that primarily upload AI-generated music from verification. However, Spotify acknowledges that 'the concept of artist authenticity is complex and quickly evolving,' leaving the possibility open for future AI verification.
Verification isn't based on traditional ID submissions. Instead, Spotify evaluates consistent listener engagement and activity both on and off the platform, including social media presence, merchandise sales, and concert dates. The company claims that more than 99% of artists that Spotify listeners actively search for will be verified at launch, covering a broad range of acts from major labels to independents. Additionally, Spotify is beta testing 'nutritional labels' for artists—compact details on milestones, album releases, and touring activity. This move comes as platforms like Deezer and Apple Music also take steps to label or limit AI-generated content, highlighting the industry's struggle to balance innovation with authenticity.
- Green checkmark confirms human artist; AI personas are ineligible at launch but future verification is possible.
- Verification based on platform and off-platform activity (social media, merch sales, concert dates), not ID uploads.
- Over 99% of actively searched artists will be verified initially, including many independent acts.
