Single-item kawaii measure validated for AI voices and game characters

However, until now, researchers lacked a validated instrument to measure user perceptions of kawaii. A single-item self-report measure had been used extensively but never formally validated. To address this gap, Katie Seaborn and Yijia Wang analyzed nine datasets from 967 unique participants, testing responses to video game character voices, visual appearances, and computer-generated voice assistant voices. Their study, accepted at CUI '26 (Conference on Conversational User Interfaces), assessed three types of validity—convergent, known-groups, and cross-context—along with reliability.

The results provide initial evidence that a single item ('How kawaii is this?') is a valid and reliable measure for both voice and visual kawaii perceptions. The measure performed consistently across different stimuli types and participant groups. While promising, the authors note that further rigor is needed, including test-retest validation, novel stimuli, and concurrent validity against a forthcoming multi-item kawaii measure.
