AWS introduced Cross-Region Inference (CRIS) on Amazon Bedrock, a managed capability that automatically routes generative AI model inference requests across multiple AWS Regions within predefined geographic boundaries. For EU customers, AWS offers system-defined inference profiles with an EU geographic scope (EU CRIS). These profiles ensure that when requests originate from an EU Region, they can only be routed to other AWS Regions within the European Union, helping customers align with GDPR data localization requirements. Requests from outside the EU can also be optimized using EU CRIS, with inference still confined to EU Regions.

CRIS is designed to maximize model throughput and minimize latency overhead by automatically selecting destination Regions based on available capacity and proximity. This builds resilience against regional capacity shortages during peak hours. Additionally, some models are available at a discounted price through global CRIS profiles, which transmit data across any supported commercial AWS Region. EU CRIS profiles do not offer that discount but provide a compliance-focused alternative. All data transmitted during cross-Region inference is encrypted and remains within the secure AWS network.
