Drones With Heat Vision Could Help Find Buried Bombs

Safer, faster ways to clear old battlefields could save lives.

Picture an old battlefield or war zone where abandoned bombs still hide underground. These "unexploded ordnance" keep people from farming, rebuilding, or even walking safely. Clearing them is slow, dangerous work. Now, researchers are testing a new tool: drones equipped with thermal cameras that see heat signatures.

Why heat? Buried objects warm up and cool down differently than the soil around them, especially after sunny days or at dawn and dusk. A drone flying overhead can capture that heat pattern and flag spots that might contain a bomb. In this study, the team collected thousands of thermal images from four field campaigns in Tennessee, using dummy bombs placed in short grass, tall brush, gravel, and other surfaces.

To make this practical, they used artificial intelligence to automatically scan the images. Two different AI models were trained to recognize the telltale heat shapes of buried objects. The system was tested at two drone heights — about 50 and 100 feet — and produced promising results. But the authors stress that this is a screening tool, not a final answer. It helps narrow down where to dig, but qualified human experts still need to do the final check.

The goal is to reduce the time, cost, and risk of demining operations. Instead of sending people to inspect every square meter, drones could first scan large areas and point teams to the most likely danger spots. That means faster progress in reclaiming farmland, restoring infrastructure, and making communities safe again.
