Turtle WoW classic server announces shutdown after Blizzard wins injunction

Blizzard Entertainment has secured a legal victory resulting in the permanent shutdown of Turtle WoW, one of the most prominent and long-running private servers for classic World of Warcraft. The server, operated by developer Torta and a team of volunteers for eight years, offered a "Classic Plus" experience—a fan-favorite concept that expands the original pre-expansion game with new raids, zones, dungeons, and playable races without raising the level cap. A U.S. judge ruled in Blizzard's favor in a copyright infringement suit filed last September, leading to a settlement that mandated "certain actions" by the Turtle WoW team. The final action is a complete termination of the project, with game servers scheduled to go offline on May 14 and all associated forums and social media channels closing on October 16.

This closure echoes the 2016 shutdown of the Nostalrius private server, which preceded Blizzard's own announcement of official World of Warcraft Classic servers. Turtle WoW's demise highlights the persistent legal vulnerability of fan-run MMO servers, despite their role in demonstrating player demand for legacy content. The Turtle WoW team had publicly advocated for a formal fan-server licensing framework, similar to the sanctioned models for games like EverQuest's Project 1999, but their pleas were unsuccessful. The shutdown occurs as Blizzard itself is experimenting with modified classic experiences through its Season of Discovery, leading many in the community to view the legal action as an effort to clear the field for the company's own official offerings.
