PyTorch Fixed a Silent Math Bug on Apple Macs

PyTorch, the free software engine that powers most modern AI, just fixed a quiet math bug affecting Apple's M-series Macs. The problem was in a calculation called SVD, short for singular value decomposition. In plain terms, SVD is a way of breaking a messy pile of numbers into simpler, cleaner parts — like sorting a huge box of Legos into neat stacks by shape and color. It's the workhorse behind image compression, recommendation engines, and finding hidden patterns in data.

The dangerous part was that this bug didn't crash anything. When it hit certain awkward inputs, it simply returned wrong answers — no warning, no error, just numbers that looked fine but weren't. Imagine a calculator that quietly rounds to the wrong digit. If a photo app, a research tool, or a movie-recommendation system sat on top of that math, it could make decisions based on nonsense without anyone noticing. Silent errors are usually worse than loud ones, because nothing tells you to double-check.

The specific trigger was narrow. The code skipped an important correction step whenever two columns of numbers were both very small — even if they were strongly related to each other. That produced skewed results and inflated some values that should have been tiny. This mainly affected unusual, poorly balanced data, not everyday use, and it only touched the Mac graphics-chip path. The fix applies a smarter test so those small cases are handled correctly, and the update also adds new tests to catch this class of error going forward. Notably, the change was written with help from Codex, an AI coding assistant.

What should you actually do? Probably nothing dramatic. If you're a regular person using apps on a Mac, you don't need to act — you'll get the fix automatically as software updates roll out. If you run AI or data work locally on an Apple laptop, updating PyTorch is worth a few minutes, since you'd rather your results be right the first time than quietly wrong.
