That means fewer emissions and potentially cheaper tickets.

There's a wrinkle, though. Wind strongly affects any single plane's fuel use — shifting the number by 34% to 81% depending on conditions. But those wind effects tend to cancel out across an entire fleet, which makes the system's everyday savings predictable. The next step is testing at busier airports and adapting to changing winds in real time.
