TIER IV open-sources AI chip designs for Level 4 autonomous driving

TIER IV, a Japanese leader in open-source autonomous driving software, has announced its participation in the Japan Science and Technology Agency's (JST) Next-Generation Edge AI Semiconductor R&D Program. The collaboration focuses on developing a software-defined system-on-chip (SoC) tailored for Level 4 autonomous driving — a level where the vehicle can handle all driving tasks without human intervention in specific conditions. TIER IV will contribute its expertise in Autoware, the open-source self-driving stack, to help define the chip's architecture and ensure it aligns with real-world autonomous driving software workloads.

A key aspect of the initiative is TIER IV's commitment to open-sourcing the AI chip's design assets and associated toolchain. This means the chip's hardware description, verification tools, and software development kits would be made publicly available, enabling researchers and companies to build custom autonomous driving hardware without paying for proprietary semiconductor IP.
