Threads tests Meta AI integration to rival X's Grok for real-time context
Get instant context on trends by mentioning @meta.ai in your posts.
Threads is rolling out a new Meta AI integration that lets users mention @meta.ai in posts or replies to get real-time context about trends and breaking stories. The feature is currently in beta testing in Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Argentina, and Singapore. When a user with a public account invokes Meta AI by asking questions like “Why are people talking about the World Cup this month?” or “Whose Met Gala looks are trending right now?” the AI will reply publicly as the @meta.ai account, using the same language as the original post. The goal is to keep conversations flowing within Threads without requiring users to leave the app for information or recommendations.
Meta AI operates similarly to X’s Grok, which often answers user queries like “Is this real?” or “Explain this.” However, Meta notes that its AI has stronger safeguards than Grok, which has generated controversial posts in the past (e.g., praising Hitler). Still, risks remain. Threads users can reduce visibility of these AI replies by muting @meta.ai, using the “Not interested” option, or hiding a reply directly. Meta plans to learn from early feedback and improve the experience before expanding to more countries.
- Beta testing in 5 countries: Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Argentina, and Singapore
- Meta AI responds in the language of the post via the @meta.ai account
- Stronger safeguards than Grok, with options to mute or hide AI replies
Why It Matters
Threads becomes a one-stop shop for discussion and real-time information without leaving the app.
