Dual-layer scaffolding framework aims to make GenAI accessible beyond chatboxes
Cross-disciplinary study reveals structural and experiential scaffolding to reduce cognitive load for users with intellectual disabilities.
A new arXiv paper (arXiv:2606.14306) from researchers Virginia Francisco, Daniel Guasch, and Raquel Hervás critiques the dominant chatbox paradigm in generative AI interfaces, arguing it imposes high cognitive demands that exclude users with intellectual disabilities (ID). To explore alternatives, they organized a cross-disciplinary co-design challenge involving two student cohorts—Computer Science and Industrial Design—tasked with developing interface concepts from the same functional requirements: prompt scaffolding, structured output, GUI-based refinement, transparency, and personalization.
Comparing the proposals revealed complementary strengths. Computer Science teams prioritized structural scaffolding—predictable navigation, reliability indicators, explicit sources, and context management for long conversations—to build trust and reduce overload. Industrial Design teams emphasized experiential scaffolding—step-by-step response flows, focus modes, proactive prompts, and multimodality—to pace interaction and guide attention. The synthesis is a dual-layer framework that expands design space beyond chat-centric models, motivating future work on technical feasibility and empirical validation with ID users.
