Tomb 209 study reveals shift from individual burials to dense reuse

A study published in Frontiers in Environmental Archaeology used an 'integrated archaeothanatological approach' to reconstruct burial sequences in tomb 209, located in Egypt's Theban necropolis. The tomb dates to the early 25th Dynasty (754–656 BCE) and was abandoned in the Ptolemaic period (305–30 BCE). Its original owner was likely a Nubian high official named Nisemro. Due to repeated flash flooding, the site became archaeologically complex, but researchers focused on Side Chamber 3, a largely undisturbed area. They excavated 16 mummified individuals (1,444 bones), one mummified dog, and a chamber with 1,775 disarticulated bone fragments from at least four additional people.
The findings show a clear chronological shift: earliest 25th Dynasty burials were individual interments with men and women often separated. Later burials (late 25th Dynasty through the Persian phase) were placed atop existing mummies, increasing density and occasional superposition. Co-author Jared Carballo-Perez of the University of La Laguna emphasized the process was not chaotic. 'There was a spatial logic in which each new deposition was adapted to the presence of previous bodies—a kind of funerary memory,' he said. The pattern matches ~80% of Theban tombs from the first millennium BCE, which contain remains from multiple periods, revealing a dynamic mortuary environment rather than simple abandonment or reuse.
