The Subjectivity of Respect in Police Traffic Stops: Modeling Community Perspectives in Body-Worn Camera Footage
A new AI can now judge police interactions from three different community perspectives.
Researchers have developed the first AI model that predicts subjective 'respect' ratings in police traffic stops by analyzing body-worn camera transcripts. Using unprecedented access to LAPD footage, they trained the model on annotations from police-affiliated, justice-impacted, and non-affiliated LA residents. The perspective-aware framework improves rating prediction and generates personalized rationales for officer and civilian behavior, aiming to systematically study perceptual differences across diverse communities to build public trust.
