The computers running crypto all live in the same few places. Fixing that isn't free.
Crypto's big selling point is that no single person or government controls it. That only works if the computers checking every transaction — called validators — are spread around the world. If they all sit in one city or one country, someone who cuts that region's internet can take the whole network down.
Here's the problem the paper proves. Networks reward validators that respond quickly, because fast replies make transactions feel snappy. But the fastest computers are the ones physically closest together. So the reward system quietly pushes everyone into the same data centers, the opposite of what crypto promises. The researcher shows this isn't a bug in one network — it's baked into the math.
Worse, fixing it costs twice. First, transactions get slower: there's a minimum delay simply from being spread across the globe, and no clever engineering removes it. Second, you have to pay validators to stay apart — a subsidy for doing something that makes them less competitive. The study measures real geography, not theory. A census of Solana's 719 validators found that although no single group controls too much on paper, they're concentrated in just one or two regions in practice.
For everyday users, this matters less today than it might soon. Crypto is being folded into payment apps, stablecoins and investment products, and if those run on networks with a hidden single point of failure, the risk doesn't disappear — it just moves somewhere you can't see it. The paper's message is blunt: true decentralization is a bill, not a setting.
