But new research shows there's a serious flaw: when a stored fact becomes outdated, the AI often trusts that old memory over brand-new, authoritative information. Surprisingly, the problem gets worse as AI models become bigger and smarter. The study tested several sizes of a popular AI family and found that larger models were more likely to believe a stale memory — especially if that old note was made to look recent. Smaller models, on the other hand, had a different issue: they trusted a stale document over a stale memory.
The researchers also tested possible fixes. Simply showing the AI that the memory is outdated (like adding a timestamp) helped the larger models change their minds. But smaller models stayed stuck — they only got it right if the conflict between the old and new fact was resolved for them beforehand. This means there's no one-size-fits-all solution.
