Study: GenAI boosts Chinese humanities students' learning and performance
Over 50% report enhanced motivation and thinking, but accuracy concerns persist
A new study from researchers Lei Fan and Fangxue Liu, published in Education Sciences and posted on arXiv, examines how generative AI (GenAI) is reshaping academic development for Chinese students in humanities and social sciences (HSS). Drawing on a large-scale survey, the study focuses on four dimensions: usage patterns, effects on learning processes and academic performance, challenges, and preferred curricular integration.
Key findings show that more than half of students perceive enhanced learning motivation, independent thinking, and creativity from GenAI tools. An even larger majority report academic performance gains, though the authors caution these improvements may partly reflect limitations in traditional assessments that GenAI can easily navigate. The study also identifies variations in perceived benefits based on students' duration of GenAI experience, with notable disciplinary differences and modest gender effects.
Concerns are significant: limited accuracy and overreliance emerged as the most pressing issues. While an overwhelming majority value ethical considerations, only slightly more than half are satisfied with privacy protection. Students prefer partial or optional GenAI integration into curricula, supported by practice-oriented training, and widely recognize its importance for future professional development. The authors provide evidence-based recommendations for responsible, pedagogically meaningful adoption.
