Every time you open an app, stream a video, or ask a chatbot a question, it takes energy. That energy often comes from power plants that burn fossil fuels. A new study takes a close look at how software engineers are tackling this problem — an area called 'green software.' Instead of building new tech, engineers are trying to make the code itself more efficient, so it does the same job with less electricity.

The research, which reviewed 390 studies published between 2010 and 2024, found that interest in green software has been building steadily — but exploded starting in 2023. The big driver? AI. Training and running AI models is incredibly energy-hungry, and researchers are now racing to find ways to make those systems more efficient. Two approaches dominate: optimization (making existing code faster and leaner) and benchmarking (measuring how much energy software actually uses so we can compare and improve).

But there's a catch. The study found that many energy measurement experiments aren't very rigorous. Small differences in hardware, temperature, or even background apps can skew the results. That makes it hard to know which 'green' solutions really work. The authors urge researchers to follow better measurement practices, so the field can move from promising ideas to proven fixes.
