Google's Gemini AI Is Now One Keystroke Away on Windows

Google has launched a Gemini app you can download onto a Windows PC, available now worldwide for Windows 10 and 11. The idea is simple: instead of opening a browser tab, logging into a chatbot, typing a question, and copying the answer back into your document, you just press Alt + Space on your keyboard. A small AI window appears on top of your work. Ask it to fact-check a sentence, suggest a few catchy slide titles, or rewrite a paragraph — then close it and keep going.

Inside the app you get everything Gemini already does, now with your files nearby. You can ask it to draft a project summary by pulling details straight from your Gmail and Google Drive. You can hand off multi-step chores to "Gemini Spark," described as a 24/7 personal AI agent — meaning AI that can actually carry out tasks for you rather than just chat. And you can generate images and videos right there, using Google's tools nicknamed Nano Banana and Gemini Omni.

Why you should care: it's about friction and time. Anyone who spends the day in Word, Excel, Outlook, or a browser knows the annoying loop of switching windows to ask an AI something and pasting the results back. Removing that loop saves a few minutes every hour, which adds up to real hours each week. Google also says the app is lightweight and runs quietly, so it shouldn't slow your computer down.

There are two honest catches. First, Alt + Space has long been a Windows keyboard command for opening a window's menu, so it may clash with what you're used to or with other apps you've installed. Second, the most useful feature — pulling from your Gmail and Drive — means giving Google's AI permission to read your personal messages and documents. That's convenient, but it's your private data. Google also notes the app's abilities are still experimental. And for now, this is Windows only.
