Thailand Pauses 49 AI Data Centers Over Power and Water Fears
AI's huge appetite for electricity and water is now slowing real-world projects.
Thailand has a simple problem: data centers are being built faster than the government can write rules for them. On September 4, officials asked 49 data centers already under construction to pause voluntarily, and put approval decisions on hold for more than 117 others waiting for permission. Together, roughly 166 projects are affected. Thailand can't legally force the 49 to stop, so it's relying on cooperation — but it can simply refuse permits to the rest. This follows an earlier freeze in April 2026, when the country stopped approving new data center projects altogether.
Why does this matter to you? Data centers are the physical buildings behind AI, cloud storage, streaming, and basically every app you use. They drink enormous amounts of electricity and water for cooling. Four government subcommittees have until early October to propose national standards covering electricity, water use, safety, location, and environmental impact. Officials are also weighing fees for resource use, special utility pricing, and backup power requirements. No final rules, fees, or thresholds have been announced yet — including a proposed rule that would treat data centers using 2 megawatts or more as heavy industry.
Thailand isn't alone. Malaysia's Johor region faces similar grid and water pressure, and Australia's energy operator has warned that big new AI facilities could destabilize the power grid. The bigger takeaway: AI's limits may not be clever software — they may be electricity, water, and patience.
