This Bendy Robot Knows Where Its Body Is — No Cameras Needed

Snake-like robots that squeeze into tight spaces just got cheaper and easier to build.

Most robots are built from rigid metal parts, which makes them strong but clumsy in tight spots. A different family of machines — called continuum robots — bends and curls like an elephant's trunk or a snake, so they can wiggle through narrow gaps and touch delicate things gently. The problem: most of these robots are custom-built for one single job, and they only know where they are because cameras or sensors in the room are watching them. Take them out of that room and they're lost.

This new platform fixes both issues. It's assembled from interchangeable bending sections, each with a stiffness that was calculated in advance — so you can snap the robot together like Lego and roughly know how it will behave without hours of testing. For awareness of its own shape, the team embedded small magnetic sensors in each joint and trained one small AI model per joint, then reused that same model in every new configuration. The robot essentially learns to feel how it's bending. In real-world tests, it tracked its own body without any external cameras.

The appeal is practical. If a robot can sense itself, you don't need to install a camera rig or tracking system around it — a big cost and setup headache in factories, pipelines, or disaster sites. Flexible robots like this are already being explored for inspecting jet engines and underground pipes, searching rubble for survivors, and helping surgeons reach places rigid tools can't. Modular parts also mean broken sections get swapped instead of scrapping the whole machine.

The catch: this is early academic research, not something you can buy. Magnetic sensing can get confused by nearby metal, the pre-set stiffness limits how much you can change a joint later, and medical or industrial use would require years of safety testing. Think of it as a promising laboratory step — cheaper, camera-free bendy robots are coming, but they're not here yet.
