Tencent's Hunyuan Hy4 rolls out as expert-level flagship in Yuanbao app

Tencent has quietly started gray-testing Hunyuan Hy4, its next flagship model, which has surfaced in the model selection list of the Tencent Yuanbao app. Spotted by a user on X, the listing shows Hy4 with the labels "Expert-Level Model" and "Use Tools to Solve Problems," placing it above Hy3—now tagged as a "New Upgrade" general-purpose model—and above DeepSeek, which is depicted as a reasoning-focused rival. This is the earliest public sighting of Hy4, following Tencent's confirmation during last week's Q2 earnings call that a larger-parameter version of Hunyuan would launch soon. The company said this upgrade will further improve model performance and multimodal capabilities, suggesting Hy4 is not just an incremental change but a substantial leap.

The "Expert-Level" tag and tool-use hints point to a model designed for complex, agentic workflows, where AI can call external APIs, browse or manipulate data, and solve multi-step problems. That would directly challenge OpenAI's GPT-4o and Anthropic's Claude in the enterprise and consumer assistant space. For Yuanbao users, Hy4 could deliver sharper reasoning, richer multimodal analysis, and tighter integration with Tencent's ecosystem, including WeChat and office products. Since gray testing typically involves a limited user pool, broader availability may come within weeks. If Hy4 delivers on its promised larger scale, it will intensify competition among China's AI labs and raise the bar for interactive AI.
