New AI Turns Ordinary CT Scans Into Detailed Brain Maps
Cheaper, faster brain scans could soon spot injuries that only costly MRIs caught.
If you go to an emergency room with a head injury, you will probably get a CT scan. CT machines are fast, cheap, and in almost every hospital — a scan takes minutes. MRI machines show the brain in far more detail, but they are slower, pricier, and less available. Here is the problem: the AI programs that read brain scans need examples where a human expert has already outlined each deep brain region, called the subcortical structures. MRI has plenty of those labeled examples. CT has almost none.
The researchers solved this by recycling. They took existing AI models trained on MRI scans and used them to label CT scans instead, combining several models into a team and letting them vote — a technique called an ensemble, which is like asking five radiologists and going with the majority. To make that translation work, they used people who had been scanned both ways. The team then publicly released the resulting CT dataset, their code, and their trained models — the first open release of its kind.
So what? Fast, consistent maps of deep brain structures could help doctors spot traumatic brain injuries, Parkinson's disease, and other neurodegenerative conditions sooner. Right now, that outlining work is done by hand, slowly and only where specialists are available. The catch: CT images show soft brain tissue less clearly than MRI does, so the computer-generated outlines are a good approximation, not a perfect one. The work is research-stage, not yet approved for real patient care, and it depends on people who happened to have both scan types.
