Amazon QuickSight adds sparklines and custom sort for smarter dashboards

Amazon QuickSight, the cloud-native BI service from AWS, has announced two new capabilities that make dashboards more expressive and business-aligned: sparklines and custom sort for controls. Sparklines are compact, inline trend charts embedded directly inside table cells. Instead of navigating to a separate line chart to determine whether a metric is improving or declining, viewers can now spot the pattern right alongside the data—saving time and reducing cognitive load. To configure, authors select a measure (e.g., Revenue) and a time dimension (e.g., Order Date), then customize line color, interpolation (linear, smooth, stepped), and Y‑axis behavior (shared or independent scales).

Custom Sort for controls gives authors the power to define a precise, business-driven order for dropdown lists and other controls. A status dropdown can now display Escalated, In Progress, Resolved, and a segment list can show Enterprise, Mid‑Market, SMB—reflecting organizational priorities rather than default database sorting. Both features work together in real‑world dashboards, for example tracking support tickets by severity with inline trend sparklines and custom status sorting. Prerequisites include an active AWS account with QuickSight Enterprise edition and Author or Author Pro access. Together, these updates transform QuickSight tables into richer, decision‑ready visualizations.
