South Korean Man Arrested for Spreading Viral AI-Generated Wolf Image Hoax

South Korean authorities have arrested a man in his 40s for circulating an AI-generated image of an escaped zoo wolf, a hoax that significantly delayed the animal's capture and strained emergency resources. The incident began on April 8 when a two-year-old male wolf named Neukgu escaped from his enclosure at a zoo in Daejeon by digging under a fence. The animal remained missing for nine days, prompting a massive multi-agency search involving police, firefighters, military personnel, and wildlife experts. Drones, thermal imaging, and tracking teams were deployed as the 30-kilogram wolf repeatedly evaded capture, forcing a nearby elementary school to shut down and residents to remain cautious.

During the search, a widely shared AI-generated image appeared online showing a light-brown wolf crossing a city intersection. The photo spread rapidly on social media and was even picked up by major media outlets and local government channels. Police confirmed the fake sighting redirected manpower and caused confusion, with officials stating it delayed the wolf's capture by as many as nine days. The suspect admitted to creating and distributing the fake image "just for fun." Neukgu was eventually recaptured safely on April 17 after a credible tip, and forensic analysis confirmed the viral image was entirely AI-generated.
