For self-driving companies, this means expansion could get much cheaper and faster. Instead of expensive on-the-ground data collection, a fleet of drones can map traffic behavior from above. The implication for regular people: cities that are not part of the initial launch map could get self-driving rides, deliveries, or shuttles sooner. It also suggests a way to keep systems updated as road layouts change.

Of course, there are catches. Drone monitoring has to obey flight rules and can't work in bad weather or under heavy tree cover. Aerial views also may miss some human details, like hand signals from cyclists. Still, this research points toward a practical way to help autonomous vehicles adapt to new places—not by driving around, but by looking down from above.
