A server rack in Singapore is now processing information using living human neurons. The National University of Singapore, data centre operator DayOne, and Australian company Cortical Labs switched on the 20-unit system in July and showed it off to guests in August. It's the first independently operated rack of its kind, and it's designed to test whether biological computing can become a low-power alternative for future AI and data centres.
The technology works by growing living human brain cells across a chip. The chip sends and receives electrical signals, while software creates a digital world the neurons can interact with. Think of it as a tiny brain in a dish hooked up to a computer. The neurons need life support: technicians feed them every three days, and they can stay alive for up to six months.
