Shopify Now Lets AI Shop and Pay for You — Amazon Says No

⚡Your AI helper can now buy things online for you — no clicking required.

Deep Dive

Shopify, the company behind millions of online storefronts, said Monday that AI assistants can now finish a purchase on its merchants' websites — not just browse and add things to a cart. Three new behind-the-scenes tools let an assistant look at the checkout page, change details like your address or delivery speed, and place the order once you give the go-ahead. The system works inside your browser and includes Shop Pay.

The trick is that the AI no longer has to guess. Older shopping bots relied on screenshots or scraping web pages — basically reading the screen the way a person would, which is slow and easy to get wrong. Shopify instead hands agents a set of structured instructions built on its Universal Commerce Protocol, a shared language for finding products, building carts and checking out. That means faster orders and fewer mistakes.

Shopify is swimming against the current. Amazon and Adidas have both moved to block AI agents from buying on customers' behalf, worried about fraud, bot traffic and losing control of the shopping experience. Shopify is betting the opposite: that people will happily hand the boring part of shopping to software. Two AI shopping assistants, Muse and Instinct, already have direct partnerships with the company.

The catch: nothing happens without your authorization, and you're still trusting an automated helper with your payment details. There's also no universal standard yet — this only works on Shopify stores, so your favorite AI assistant might be able to buy from one shop and not the next. And merchants have to opt in, so not every store will switch it on right away.

Key Points
  • AI helpers can now go from 'add to cart' all the way to 'order placed' on Shopify stores, instead of stopping before payment.
  • Three new tools — get_checkout, update_checkout and complete_checkout — let an AI read your checkout, change your delivery details and submit the order after you approve.
  • Amazon and Adidas are blocking AI agents from buying for customers, so the shopping world is splitting into two camps.

Why It Matters

Could turn 'add to cart' into done — saving time, but handing an AI your credit card.
