When you get a biopsy, a sliver of tissue is dyed with pink and purple chemicals so a pathologist can see the cells under a microscope. Scientists are now teaching AI to skip the dye entirely: shine light on the untreated tissue, and let software predict what the stained version would look like. The catch has always been size. A single slide holds billions of pixels — far too much for a computer to process at once.
So computers chop the slide into thousands of small tiles. The problem: those tiles don't always match. Colors drift, edges don't line up, and the finished image looks like a badly stitched panoramic photo — with visible seams a doctor can't trust. The new method, called COMB (short for Consistency Memory Bank), fixes this by letting each tile peek at its neighbors. It stores context from nearby tiles and retrieves it as it moves along, like a mural painter who keeps glancing at the last panel to match colors.
The team says their approach beats existing methods on both image quality and seam-free consistency, and it even improves a follow-up task: spotting tumors in the finished image. Because no dye is used, the tissue is never altered — meaning it can be re-examined later, or tested another way. The catch: this is research, not hospital practice. The work was accepted to MICCAI 2026, a major medical imaging conference, but it hasn't been approved by regulators or tested across the messy variety of real patient samples.
