Self-driving cars have one job that matters more than any other: not hitting people. But the software inside them has mostly been trained to watch other vehicles. Pedestrians, cyclists, and people on scooters — researchers call them "vulnerable road users," or VRUs — move less predictably. They dart out, change direction, and behave differently than cars do. The new approach works in any situation and for any kind of road user, without needing to be told in advance what kind of scene it's looking at. To test it, the researchers used a large public dataset of crash and near-crash driving scenarios. Their pedestrian-specific danger rating improved how well the system classified risky pedestrians by up to 50%. Their broader prediction framework, which estimates danger a moment before it happens, beat the best existing methods by 275% and reached an accuracy score of 0.96 out of 1.0. In plain terms, it's right about 96 times out of 100 at sorting dangerous situations from safe ones.
