Scientists Built a Tiny Brain-Like Chip That Mimics Memory

A team of researchers has built a small computer chip that copies how a specific part of the brain stores memories. They focused on the hippocampus, the brain region that turns today's experiences into tomorrow's memories, and used a rodent version of one section of it as a blueprint. The result is a chip with just 179 artificial brain cells and about 18,000 connections between them — tiny compared to a real brain, but enough to show brain-like behavior.
The hardware itself is unusual. It's built from memristors (electronic parts that remember the signals that passed through them, like a light switch that recalls being flipped). Because memristors behave a bit like brain cells, they can do AI-style calculations using very little electricity. The researchers found something surprising: the random electrical noise in the hardware, which engineers usually treat as a flaw, actually made the chip's behavior smoother and more stable than their computer simulation of the same design.
