A robotics conference called ROSCon Global just published its sponsor list for this year's event in Toronto, which starts September 22. On it: AMD, NVIDIA, Intel, Qualcomm, Canonical, Siemens, Huawei, Foxglove and dozens more, from giant chipmakers down to small startups. For a non-technical reader, the interesting part isn't the conference — it's who is paying for it.
The conference is built around ROS, short for Robot Operating System. Despite the name, it isn't software you install on a laptop. Think of it as a shared set of building blocks, like a universal Lego kit for robots. It handles the dull essentials — how a robot's camera talks to its wheels, how it plans a path across a room. Because it's free and open, a small startup can build a warehouse robot or a robotic lawn mower without hiring a team to reinvent those basics. That's why nearly every robot you've heard of quietly depends on it.
So why do NVIDIA, Intel and Qualcomm care enough to hand over sponsorship money? Because robots are the next big buyer of computer chips, and the companies that make the chips want their hardware to be the natural choice.
