New Tech Lets Robots Work Across Countries in Real Time
Could soon mean drones that fly inspections globally or surgical robots operated remotely.
A new paper presents ROS2 Connect, a WebSocket-based communication framework that enables transparent and secure ROS2 interaction across wide-area networks. Because ROS2 normally relies on multicast discovery that often doesn't work over WAN, this client-server framework offers an alternative that needs no changes to network infrastructure or DDS configuration. It supports bidirectional exchange of topics, services, actions, and system data, with authentication and access control built in. In real WAN testing, it showed lower latency, higher stability, and better scalability than DDS Router, rosbridge, and Zenoh, and the authors say it provides a reliable foundation for teleoperation and distributed robotics.
