Colombia's Free Robotics Meetup Opens Doors to Robot Builders

Most robots you'll ever meet don't run on some company's secret code. They run on ROS — short for Robot Operating System, a free, open-source set of tools that tells a robot how to see, move and plan. Think of it as the Android of robots: anyone can use it, anyone can improve it. On November 7, 2026, the ROS community in Colombia is holding a full-day meetup in Cartagena to swap ideas, show off projects and teach newcomers.

The event runs 8am to 5pm at the Auditorio Napoleón de la Rosa Echávez at Universidad Tecnológica de Bolívar. It's organized by IEEE RAS Colombia, IEEE RAS Colcaribe, IEEE RAS Javeriana and UTBot — university robotics chapters and student groups. Why should you care if you've never touched a robot? Because open-source robotics is how a lot of everyday automation gets cheap. When a country builds a strong local robotics community, local companies can hire locally instead of importing expensive systems. That means jobs, and eventually cheaper services.
