Prime Video's Spider-Noir revives Depression-era superhero noir with Nicolas Cage

Spider-Noir, the new live-action Prime Video series, reimagines Marvel's noir line from 2009 in a Depression-era New York. Nicolas Cage plays Ben Reilly, a jaded private investigator who abandoned his vigilante identity, The Spider, after his fiancée's death five years earlier. Co-showrunners Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot crafted a world where Irish mob boss Finn Byrne (Silvermane, played by Brendan Gleeson) controls the city, and superpowered henchmen like Sandman (Jack Huston), Tombstone (Abraham Popoola), and Megawatt (Andrew Lewis Caldwell) are slowly dying from their abilities. Cage described his portrayal as "70 percent Humphrey Bogart and 30 percent"—leaving room for his signature flamboyance.

The series excels in character work and atmosphere. Ben's secretary Janet (Karen Rodriguez) keeps his business alive, reporter buddy Robbie (Lamorne Morris) pushes him to revive The Spider, and sultry singer Cat Hardy (Li Jun Li) adds romantic danger. The plot kicks off when Ben is hired to find a criminal with pyrokinetic powers, revealing a larger conspiracy. Critics praise the whip-smart dialogue, gorgeous cinematography, and Cage's anchoring performance. Spider-Noir stands out as a rare superhero series that prioritizes mood, character, and homage over spectacle, appealing to both noir purists and Marvel fans.
