The results were surprisingly practical. The AI-plus-solver approach won when several things went wrong at once, which makes sense because that is the messiest situation. But the plain planning software nearly tied it on single problems, and it did something more valuable: it kept much more of the trip you had already accepted. Both repair styles made fewer changes than starting over, meaning your paid hotel and your booked museum slot survived. The cost gap was big too. The classic method used zero AI calls, the winning AI setup needed just one, and the local-edit AI burned far more.
So what does this mean for you? If you use an AI trip planner, the best future versions will probably quietly fix your itinerary rather than rewrite it, protecting the bookings you already committed to. The catch: this is a lab study on simulated trips, not a shipping product, so do not expect your favourite travel app to change tomorrow. Still, it points clearly at cheaper, gentler AI travel help.
