Apple's New Siri Can Listen All Day Without Recording You

At its Wednesday launch event, Apple showed off a set of new Siri abilities it calls Audio Intelligence. These include Siri Recap (a quick catch-up on what was just said), Live Rewind (replay the last stretch of a conversation), Sound Recognition (alerts you to doorbells, alarms, or a crying baby), and Music Recognition (name that song). The idea is a watch that quietly understands the world around you, so you do not have to stop and type.

That kind of always-on listening normally makes people nervous, so Apple published a document explaining how it keeps your audio private. The trick is something called a Secure Exclave — think of it as a locked, soundproof booth built directly into the S11 chip inside the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. Audio from the microphone goes into that booth, gets analyzed for speech, sounds, or music, and is never written to a file. The stream is constantly overwritten. Apple says watchOS, your apps, and Apple itself cannot reach inside to pull it out.

Apple also built in manual controls. Live Rewind only turns on when you double-tap the watch's Digital Crown — every single time. You decide which text to keep from Recap or Rewind. If recordings need to move from the watch to your iPhone, they travel encrypted between the two secure chips, and any text you save to iCloud syncs with end-to-end encryption if you use a passcode and two-factor login.

The catch: you are trusting Apple's design rather than proving it yourself, since none of this can be independently inspected from the outside. These features also only work on Apple's newest watches, so millions of existing owners will not get them. And "private today" is not a permanent promise — companies can change how features work with a software update.
