Quantifying resilience for distribution system customers with SALEDI

Researchers develop a better tool to measure the true cost of large-scale blackouts.

Deep Dive

Researchers have created a new metric called SALEDI to better quantify the impact of major blackouts on electricity customers. Traditional reliability indices struggle with the extreme variability of large outages. SALEDI uses a logarithmic transformation of customer outage minutes to provide a more accurate and statistically sound measure of resilience. The method was tested using real outage data from five utilities, offering a practical tool for grid planners and regulators to assess severe event impacts.

Why It Matters

This helps utilities and governments better prepare for and respond to catastrophic grid failures.
