Red Hat’s Open Source and AI Programs Office partnered with UC Santa Cruz to launch the inaugural Santa Cruz PyTorch Meetup, bringing together 45 engineers, students, and local leaders for an evening of GPU/CUDA deep dives and lightning talks on AI applications in chemistry, plant health, and autonomous driving.
The event kicked off with Faradawn Yang from NVIDIA delivering a hands-on session on GPU architecture, breaking down matrix math operations, Tensor cores, and how forward/backward passes in PyTorch leverage these components for training and inference. Anil Vishnoi from Red Hat followed with a technical dive into programming PyTorch kernels for GPU acceleration, highlighting real-world optimization strategies. Attendees included professionals from local tech firms, UCSC faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, and summer interns, fostering a cross-disciplinary exchange in a relaxed outdoor setting with Mediterranean dinner and PyTorch swag—stickers proved the crowd favorite.
