AI Startup Anthropic Valued at $60 Billion But Far Behind OpenAI
This AI race could change which chatbots you use daily.
Anthropic, a company founded by former OpenAI engineers, is about to get a lot more money. It's raising $2 billion from investors, which would make the company worth $60 billion. That's more than triple its value from a year ago. This shows investors are still very excited about AI, even if the company isn't as popular as its rival OpenAI.
But here's the catch: Anthropic's AI chatbot, Claude, is not nearly as popular as OpenAI's ChatGPT. In January, ChatGPT had 128 million visitors, while Claude had only 2.5 million. That's 51 times more traffic for ChatGPT. And when it comes to businesses using AI, 63% use OpenAI's technology, while only 31% use Anthropic's. So even though Anthropic is raising a lot of money, it's still far behind in actual usage.
Meanwhile, a new competitor called DeepSeek is shaking things up. Its AI model is very cheap and got 130,000 downloads in January alone. For companies that run AI on their own computers (not in the cloud), about 7% are now using DeepSeek, which is more than double from the month before. This shows that cheaper options are becoming popular.
In other news, Ilya Sutskever, a co-founder of OpenAI who left after a big fight, is now raising money for his new startup, Safe Superintelligence. It could be valued at $20 billion. He's focused on making AI safe. So the AI world is still growing and changing fast, with big money and big personalities.
- Anthropic is raising $2 billion, making it worth $60 billion, but its chatbot Claude has 51 times less traffic than ChatGPT.
- Only 31% of organizations use Anthropic's AI, compared to 63% for OpenAI.
