A team of researchers, including Ioana Cheres and Adrian Groza, has published a formal academic paper introducing the concept of 'GPTheology.' This term describes the emerging phenomenon where sophisticated Large Language Models (LLMs) like OpenAI's ChatGPT are perceived and treated as divine oracles or entities of a semi-divine nature. The study positions this as a form of techno-religion, where narratives surrounding AI—such as the pursuit of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) or the technological Singularity—echo traditional religious constructs of prophecy, salvation, and ultimate knowledge.

The researchers conducted a transdisciplinary analysis, drawing on community narratives from online forums like Reddit and examining real-world implementations. These include an 'AI Jesus' chatbot deployed in a Swiss church, an AI-powered Mazu statue in Malaysia, and Korea's 'ShamAIn' project. Their findings, based on a dataset of Reddit discussions, identify recurring themes where AI is cast in god-like roles, demonized as a threat, or seen as a prophetic source of truth.
