Porsche will contest Laguna Seca in historic colors of the Apple Computer livery
Celebrating 50 years of Apple and 75 years of Porsche Motorsport with a retro 1980s design.
Porsche Penske Motorsport is bringing a historic twist to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship at Laguna Seca on May 3. The two factory Porsche 963 entries will race in a special livery inspired by the iconic Apple Computer spectrum design that adorned a Porsche 935 K3 during the 1980 season, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans. This one-time tribute marks the 75th anniversary of Porsche Motorsport and the 50th anniversary of Apple, which first partnered with Porsche in 1980. The livery will be carried by the No. 6 car driven by Kévin Estre and Laurens Vanthoor, and the No. 7 car shared by Julien Andlauer and Felipe Nasr. The No. 7 duo, along with Laurin Heinrich, already won the 24 Hours of Daytona and 12 Hours of Sebring this season, leading the manufacturers' standings. Porsche Head of Works Motorsport LMDh Urs Kuratle noted that the team scored a 1-2 finish at Laguna Seca last year and had a productive two-day test there in early April to optimize the hybrid prototype for the upcoming race.
Customer teams will also compete in California. JDC-Miller MotorSports enters a Porsche 963 in GTP with Laurin Heinrich and Tijmen van der Helm sharing the No. 5 car. In GTD Pro, AO Racing will run a special “Sketchy” livery on its Porsche 911 GT3 R — a hand-drawn concept that evolved into the iconic dinosaur “Rexy.” The car will be piloted by Nick Tandy and Harry King. The Laguna Seca circuit, located about 80 miles south of Apple Park, adds geographic significance to the collaboration. Oliver Schusser, Apple’s VP for Music, Sports, and Beats, highlighted the shared passion for innovation that began with the original 1980 race car. Porsche Motorsport VP Thomas Laudenbach drew parallels between the 911 and Apple as icons of continuous development, linking Zuffenhausen, Weissach, and Cupertino.
