The authors tested four prototypical architectures—tree (Reddit), layered hierarchy (Facebook), network (Twitter), and complete graph (TikTok)—against chronological (LIFO) and popularity-based (Hot) algorithms. On tree-like platforms (e.g., Reddit), the algorithm has no detectable effect—architecture effectively locks in outcomes regardless of recommendation logic. On layered hierarchies (Facebook) and networks (Twitter), the Hot algorithm provides modest positive effects on both spread and quality. But on complete graph structures (TikTok), the Hot algorithm triggers winner-take-all dynamics that severely degrade information quality and make the relationship between content quality and popularity unpredictable. The authors conclude that architectural considerations are more powerful levers than algorithmic interventions for designing healthy online spaces, warning that platform reform efforts focused exclusively on algorithm choice may be insufficient on architecturally unconstrained platforms and unnecessary on architecturally constrained ones.
