The researchers built a system called ROBUST TAMP. TAMP stands for task and motion planning — the robot's brain for deciding what to do ("grab the pan") and how to move ("reach 12 inches to the left"). Older systems assumed the robot had a perfect mental map of the room before starting. If something was hidden, they'd fail or need a full restart.
ROBUST TAMP changes that. It tells the AI to plan only based on what the robot can actually see right now. It also validates each action against a strict checklist, so the robot doesn't try impossible moves. The real trick: when a new object appears — say, a fish spatula slides into view — the robot treats that as a "replanning event." It rebuilds its mental scene and makes a fresh plan using everything it has learned so far.
The team tested the system in simulated kitchens and grills with hidden objects, non-target clutter, and containers like drawers and fridges. They used different sizes of AI models that understand text and images. All of them improved at finishing tasks, and the system handled surprises gracefully. It's still research, not a product you can buy. But it's a big step toward robots that can cook alongside you, tidy up after kids, or work in warehouses where things constantly shift.
