OpenAI launches ChatGPT Work for persistent automated workflows

OpenAI today launched ChatGPT Work, a new tool designed to handle complex, multi-hour projects without interruption. Unlike previous agent modes that timed out after a few minutes, ChatGPT Work can stay with a task for hours, turning a high-level goal into finished work — from customer research to a campaign brief to locally tailored marketing assets. The system automatically accesses external tools when needed, and users can force specific integrations via the “@” symbol. It also introduces Scheduled Tasks, a cron-like feature for recurring or event-triggered automation.

ChatGPT Work integrates with Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, and SharePoint through custom plugins. The desktop version can read and modify local files and use a built-in browser. OpenAI is sunsetting its Atlas browser and rebranding the standard ChatGPT desktop app as “ChatGPT Classic.” Pricing is usage-based under a credit system, with plans up to $100/month; enterprise and edu admins can set spend limits. The new GPT-5.6 model powers the tool, offering three tiers with costs ranging from $5 to $30 per million output tokens. OpenAI warns that complex tasks will consume more credits, but the promise is a true AI colleague that works alongside you, not just a chat partner.
