OpenAI exec Brad Lightcap leaves to launch new AI venture

Brad Lightcap, one of OpenAI's most senior executives, is leaving the ChatGPT maker to launch a new venture. Lightcap joined OpenAI in 2018, rose to chief operating officer, and has been central to building the company's finance, legal, people, and partnerships teams. His departure was announced on X, where he said he's been "focused on the next horizon" and believes "there are a few important new things the world will need to get right as we enter this next period." CEO Sam Altman responded, saying he was "excited to work together on what's next."

Lightcap's exit comes after his role was already reshuffled: in April, he moved from COO to a position focused on special projects, and OpenAI said he was no longer involved in day-to-day management of larger teams. Because of that shift, the company doesn't expect his departure to majorly impact operations. The news follows another senior leadership change: Fidji Simo, OpenAI's CEO of AGI deployment, stepped down to a part-time advisory role in July after an extended medical leave.

Lightcap hasn't revealed details of his new venture, but his comments suggest it will tackle big AI-era challenges. With a background that includes Y Combinator and nearly a decade at OpenAI, he's well-positioned to become a significant founder himself. He noted he'll remain nearby and "not going far," hinting he may continue to collaborate with Altman and OpenAI from the outside.
