OpenAI has unveiled its first branded hardware device: the Codex Micro, a $230 specialized mini-keyboard produced in a limited-run collaboration with Work Louder. The device is designed to let users monitor and quickly interact with multiple Codex agents without constantly checking their screens. Its standout feature is six frosted keys on the top two rows that provide real-time, color-coded status updates: white when a thread is idle, blue when Codex is thinking, green when a task completes, amber when human feedback is needed, and red when an error occurs. Tapping a lit key brings up the relevant Codex window on-screen. Below these live-status keys are six buttons mapped by default to common Codex actions: accept changes, reject changes, branch threads, and push-to-talk for audio prompts. These can be remapped via software, and users can also cycle through five other function sets for general computing shortcuts. The device includes 32 interchangeable keycaps and a physical “yeet” key option.
While the Codex Micro is essentially a modified version of Work Louder's existing Creator Micro keyboard, it features prominent OpenAI branding and a “You can just build things” tagline. The limited-run nature of the collaboration suggests OpenAI is testing the hardware market cautiously, but the launch underscores the company's broader ambitions beyond software. OpenAI has been working with former Apple design chief Jony Ive on a more ambitious handheld, screenless device, though that project has faced delays and a recent Apple lawsuit over trade secrets.
